Lessons from Michael Phelps: Go for gold in your business

Are you one of the millions of Americans watching the summer Olympics?

Well, even if you’re not, I’m sure you’ve heard about the stunning success of U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps. As I write this, Phelps is getting ready tonight to compete for his seventh gold medal, near his goal of winning a record-setting eight. Phelps is definitely the breakout star of the Olympics so far.

So as I watched him last night rack up yet another win, my mind turned (as it usually does) to entrepreneurs, and I started thinking about the lessons we can learn from Phelps’ success. Here are some:

  • Innovation is key: Phelps’ unusual “dolphin kick” swimming style is widely credited with helping him take the lead in races. What makes your business unique? Embrace it and market it — your “unique selling proposition” is what will put you in the lead.
  • Pace yourself: Phelps often holds back in a race, staying on pace with the other swimmers until close to the end of a race, when, in a burst of speed, he surges ahead. You may be bursting with ideas about what to do in your business? That’s great, but don’t burn yourself out by trying to do a million things at once. Focusing on your most important goals and pacing your energy will get you further in the long run.
  • Have a support system: Phelps’ mother has garnered almost as much of the spotlight as her son for her ongoing support of him. You too need a support system — your family, your friends, and other business owners who can understand the challenges and issues you face.
  • Persevere: The difference between Olympic athletes and ordinary jocks is that even when they get discouraged, Olympians still keep going. They get up and train every morning, without fail. Phelps relies on regular routines and training regimens to stay in peak condition. Similarly, you’ve got to keep your business skills sharp and keep going even when you don’t feel like it.
  • Have an attitude of gratitude: In refreshing contrast to many athletes these days, Phelps always expresses awe and gratitude for his fans, for his success, and simply for the honor of being able to participate in the Olympic Games. As your business grows, don’t forget to express your thanks to everyone who helps you achieve success — and to take some time out to appreciate your good fortune.
