Verifying my website on Google

I am trying to verify my website on google but i am confused in how to do it.  Google is asking me to upload an html file or use a metatag to verify that I am the owner of my site.  They give instructions but they are not terribly clear and I have as yet not been able to confirm.  Can anyone help?

Thank you

Re: Verifying my website on Google

Hi steve,

I am really new to this as well.  (well, I'm assuming you are)

The problem with Live is that you can't edit the html above the "body" of the web document yet.  That is wherew you would add the html.  The other option will not work either because you are supposed to add a folder to the root directory.  (ie: www.yoursitesite.com/file)   But Office Live only allows you to add files to the documents extension.  (ie: www.yoursite.com/documents/file)   Its not going to work.  I am trying to figure out ways to get around this but am having little luck.  I saw that Live plans on updating the custom html somewhere.  If this includes html above the body we should be set.  You cant verify with Live search without either of these two techniques.  You'd think that Office Live would get on that?

Re: Verifying my website on Google

Being vertified with Google Webmaster Tools has no effect with your website being indexed or listed on Google search engine but if you are still interested in getting vertified there are websites (OLXT.com) that offer this service for a fee. Office Live websites do not have the ability to eighter add code to the metatag area or upload files to the root directory.

Hey Steve,

Are you trying to simply submit your site to Google? As far as I know, the process of uploading a file comes into play when you are trying to use Google pages to edit your website. If you just want to submit your site to google, simply go here and enter you URL http://www.google.com/addurl/

I face the same issue. But I think it is not required for google to index your site.

I have found that vertify and sitemap are a waste of time if you forget to optimize your websites Title, Keywords, and Description first

Re: Verifying my website on Google

My advice having gone through the very same process would be to save yourself hours of trouble, research and heartache by simple buying the OLSitemap solution from www.softprizm.com for a measly $15. The great thing about this solution is that it adds a dynamic (changes when your site changes) sitemap to your website and in the excellent step by step instructions includes submission of your sitemap and verification to google, yahoo and MSN Live. The email tech support is also superb. In less than an hour your website will be verified (including sitemap) with all three search engines and this part od your SEM is complete.

I did manage to get verified for free with google using the instructions at http://solutionsforofficelive.com/googlewebmastertools.aspx but in comparison to the softprizm solution it is a lot more complicated and time consuming and you then have to solve the "adding a sitemap" (although this is not essential) problem later on.

Before doing any of this I would agree with Scybyte that you need to optimise every page your own site first (going to Page Properties and then the Search Engine Optimization tag). You can then review each page using http://www.freewebsubmission.com/web-page-analyzer.html to ensure you have optimized correctly and it is bot friendly.

But I promise you that after you have achieved the above the next thing you'll look at is adding a site map to google and then you'll look at verifying (and adding sitemaps) with the other large search engines (Yahoo and Live). I would suggest you don't follow this path and take a huge shortcut by optimising your site then buying the complete solution at: www.softprizm.com/olsitemap.aspx.

Good luck,

Fergus

Re: Verifying my website on Google

The above worked!  Thanks Fergus! It took a couple of tries after figuring out wich part of the code I was suppose to insert. I have waited a long time to get verified through google. And No, you don't have to get verified once you submit to google, but it is nice to see what google is doing and you can't see that without being verified. So thank you.

Re: Verifying my website on Google

1.  Sign Up for Google Webmaster tools.

2.  Add your site and choose the meta validation method.

3.  Copy the Google meta verification code into notepad or any text editor.

<meta name="verify-v1" content="rCLLGGTVdEiGe+DXLHKLCD670B8f99LfK/Ax6s=" >

4.  Copy the code below into into the same notepad or text editor.

%22%20%2F%3E%3Cmeta name=%22verify-v1%22 content=%22googleid=

5.  Simply replace the ID in the code with your id from the code from Google.  If your ID contains "+", replace the + with %2B.

%22%20%2F%3E%3Cmeta name=%22verify-v1%22 content=%22rCLLGGTVdEiGe+DXLHKLCD670B8f99LfK/Ax6s=

6.  Copy the finished code, and to your home page (default.aspx), open page properties, and paste the code into the keywords text box after any keywords!  Make sure the whole code is pasted, since the keyword box has a character limit and if you have to many keywords and some or all of the code might not get pasted in, shouldn't have to worry, if you do, you might want to go over the list of keywords since you really shouldn't have that many.

7.  Go back to Google Webmaster tools and verify.

Note:

If it doesn't work, view your page, make sure there is no code showing at the top.  Also right click on the page, view source, and look at the meta tags (near the top).  The validation tag should look like the orginal Google meta tag:

<meta name="verify-v1" content="rCLLGGTVdEiGe+DXLHKLCD670B8f 99LfK/Ax6s=" />

worked for me twice, and every body says it does help for google to index site, hogwash, i was on google the next day and i started site 3 weeks ago, coincidence they crawled after i verified, i think not.

also insert your new code where your keywords go in page propertied, after you delete all your key words first then paste new code, then repaste keywords after you get verified, tim
