Jim, the email address you create in OL becomes a Passport (i.e. Windows Live) ID.  In other words, create an address such as me@mydomain.com and that is now a Windows Live ID.  Your other WLID is an existing email address "you've been using for 8 years."  That's why it is telling you it already exists.  There cannot be two addresses with the same name.  The closest thing to a work-around is to forward mail from your office live account to your 8 year old account.

I believe this scenario is not supported yet; is that passport account that you mention a hotmail account?  if that is the case it already has a mailbox.

It's not a Hotmail account.  Support believes there is a workaround.  They are attempting to test it out.  I will keep you posted.
