Re: Tables and Text

Hello Rx, thank you for your reply. I have recently put the content in seperate tables, within an 800px table, instead of adding rows and columns into one large table, which did not keep it how it should look in other browsers. What i meant by pulling everything apart was two of the four pictures on the home page were placed under the first two pictures and the long slender grey box with words on the right hand side was then dragged into the middle; so the desired look was ruined. This was in FF.  I have had the table width setting at 800px on all my pages from the very start underneath a 100% banner.

I hope the change into seperate tables, albeit with a small gap between the pictures and words, (not what i originally wanted) works in all browsers.

Thanks for your time ..

Re: Tables and Text

Your site looks as you intended in FF3.0.  The home page is an inverted "L."  The only anomaly I saw was the Home and Comments pages were left-justified in FF, while all of the others were centered.  In IE7, all the pages are centered.  I'm not sure what would account for that.  The little spaces you mentioned are probably not going to be noticed by most of us.

Okay thanks for taking a look. Hopefully there is an answer to the mysterious left justification and will be posted on these boards in due course..

Re: Tables and Text
pmb...Hi, One thing I've found is that the more I work with the tables, the easier it gets. But even then, after I think I've "Mastered" something, the next attempt might not go right. I think that may be in the formatting of things that I'm not savvy to yet. For one thing, it took me awhile to work with the cell padding and cell spacing - that will help to some extent. I gave up on Firefox looking ok - just cannot get it to adjust. As far as locking it all in place, I haven't heard of anything that allows that on the site - unless you can figure out a way to set up a page on another program - like I do on PaperPort when I save as pdf then as jpg - and then upload it and connect to it by a hyperlink. Then your page would be locked in place. It's something I experimented with a few weeks ago, but haven't been able to work with it lately. My first thought about all of it was to learn a few new words even my trucker hubby hasn't used (or heard) - oh, and pull out a few clumps of hair along the way! But it will get easier, promise! Sue

Re: Tables and Text

 RXDave,

Can you tell me how to make the columns a fixed width?  No matter what each column seems to have a mind of it's own.  I tried changing page setting to fixed, but then I will have to redesign most of my other pages on the site.

Can you look at the http://thinkonit.org/NewHome.aspx and provide some suggestions?   I want consistency and balance.

Your http://thinkonit.org/NewHome.aspx does not exist or work. Got other examples? And what are you using to create the tables (I presume that's what you are referring to when you say columns)?

Re: Tables and Text

Elizabeth, What I would try first is set the handles and try to scrunch it in.  Move the cursor over the table border.  When the crossed arrows appear, click and little boxes will appear on the edges and corners.  Click on the right edge box and move the border in.  The text will wrap differently.  The images will determine how far you can go.  In both tables and zones, the content will determine the width.  Text can move in and out, but images cannot.

Another way to control a table width is to right-click on it, then click on properties.  You can explicitly set the table width in pixels (e.g. 600px) in the box.

I think a better solution for that page is to change the orientation of rows and columns.  In other words, put the images in the first row down the left column.  Add the captions (second row) in the same cells as the images (first column).  Now you only need 2 more columns for the rest of the content.  A three column table would fit nicely.  Another tip, tables tend to look better when they appear to be "tight."  The content of the cells and the white space around it should look in proportion.  Play with the cell padding (also in Properties) and see what looks best.  The default setting is 8.  Try this out on a test page and see if you like it.  Good luck.

Re: Tables and Text

fz, there is really nothing to teach.  If you create a table with one or more cells, then set the width property, any text entered into the cell will wrap automatically.  To set the width property:

  1. Right-click on the table
  2. Click on properties
  3. Enter the "Width:" in the text box; for example, 300px
  4. the width property will also set itself if you adjust the handles (little boxes) with your mouse pointer

Another suggestion, it would be best to start a new discussion, rather than reviving such an old one.  Good luck.

Re: Tables and Text

Hi.  I am just discovering tables and have hit a few bumbs along the way.  Some tables I am able to adjust the cell padding and others will not change from the default of 8.  Any thoughts as to why this is happening?  I also can't un-bold text, or some cells will look and "say they are bold" in page editor but on-line they are not.  Any advice.  Thanks, Karen

Re: Tables and Text

Weird things have been known to happen.  It seems to happen more if the tables get large and complicated.  I tend to  break them up a bit, using another directly below the first.  If the formating problems are limited to a specific row you can add a new row and delete the problem one. If it is table wide, you might have to create a new table and start again.  You can move unaffected content into the new table.

The content inside tables can take on the formatting of the page in the area it is.  You can format the text where you want it, hightlight the formatted text and then paste the table there.  That might be what is happening when it looks different when you view it.

For padding, if you are putting a table inside another, it will only go so small, it insists on keeping some space between them. If that isn't the case, then I would probably use a new table, that one is broken.
