Advanced features: custom header

Hello everyone, first post on the new forums :)

Has anyone tried creating a custom header using the new advanced features?  I don't use the 780p width and was wondering if anyone could provide help with replacing the header.  I've found how to turn of the header on all pages except my maing page and am now looking to creat a "thin" header.

I've seen some walk throughs on how to do it for fixed width pages before the advanced features came out but haven't been able to find anyplace where people have worked with the advanced features.  Would this require a web designer program such as frontpage?

 Any help would be appreciated.

Ben

I've tried the new features for changing header, basically ussless at least for what they are designed for.  Custom header, does not customize your header, it just inserts a new into the body of your page, what good does that do????  Anyway, still using the old method, http://solutionsforofficelive.com/modifyheader.aspx

Re: Advanced features: custom header

thanks studio allen.  What do you mean it just places another header on the body?  maybe that was what I was trying to do.  anyway, i'll play around with it later.  Do you know if you customize the header on a test page, will it effect the rest of my site or just that page?  I'm afraid to use the advanced features for fear they may diable the whole site...

I did try your method and I do like it, but I don't like how it loads separately--- although it doesn't look too bad when you turn off headers and then use your method.  Feel free to throw that little hint on your site.  (it just looks like it is the last graphic to load, rather than covering up the OL header.

Re: Advanced features: custom header
  1. No FrontPage or any web editing program is required unless you want the flexibility in customizing your entire site.

In using the custom header feature it might be helpful to modify the sytlesheets (xslt, & css) in order to yield the results you desire. As far as the width of your header it should easy to create a "thin" header.

 Here's a suggestion I hope is helpful.

  1. Copy the default xslt code displayed when you insert a custom header.
  2. Paste it inside notepad or a web editing program such a SharePoint Designer or FrontPage.
  3. Save the file (yourstyle.xsl). Close XSLT window.
  4. Click on the Site Designer tab
  5. Click Style Sheet
  6. Click View default CSS
  7. Save the css file to the same location as your xsl file.
  8. Open both the xsl and css file in your favorite editor or Notepad.
  9. Review the classes used in the CSS and XSL file.
  10. Modify both files accordingly then upload xsl file to your documents folder and copy/paste the css into the style sheet window in the Site Designer.

I highly recommend that if you're not comfortable with using stylesheets (xslt and css) please seek the advice of a professional designer to obtain the results you desire.
