Putting custom pictures into the header.

how can i put a custom picture into my header?  I was able to delete the header, to put my logo instead, but it only wanted to put my logo in the center of my page, not where the old header was.  So, unless someone can tell me how to replace their header with my logo, then how do I insert my own photo into the header that is currently there?

thanks.

If you check the Masters Sites you are sure to find how to replace the header.  To place your logo into the OL header upload your logo into the Image Gallery then, in Site Designer click on 'Logo' -  all your images should load in the pop up box and you can choose which one.  I'd check 'next to title' for most, 'above' places it above the header rather than in it.

I believe I did that, well.. tried it.  Then when I went to the advanced settings and removed the header itself, it took my logo with it.

Re: Putting custom pictures into the header.

Hello,  This is something I wrote a while back, but perhaps it will help you.

The header layout choices and color schemes work together in a way that actually provides you with many more options than you would think.  To see how it works together, first choose the photo you want as your logo.

Size it in your photo manager program to about the size you want. My logo photo is 309x240 pixels.  Upload it into the image gallery.  In site designer, select your logo photo, “next to title” and “large/true size”.  If the size is too big or too small, delete it, go back to your photo program and adjust.  Of course, you are working with a copy of the photo and never the original.

In header, type some text.  You can change it later, but for now put some in so that you can watch what happens to it as we go along.

Under theme, choose “general, no photo”.

Skip to navigation and choose one of the three arrangements.  It is possible to remove the navigation bars.  The grey line under my title and logo photo is really the navigation bar.  Left navigation leaves a wide blank space on the left side of the page, but it does seem to leave more room for tabs.  On the other hand, one site I know has so many tabs on the left side that it is overwhelming.

Go to color and select the first set.  Go back to style and select the first option.  Take a look.  Next go down the list of style options watching how your text and photo are affected.  Don’t bother looking at the symbol for the style options – it does not give you a good idea of what the finished header will look like.  (I’m using the last one on the list.  I guess this is why it took me half the night to do.)  You will notice that different colors from the color scheme are featured with different styles.  So, it is worth while to take the time to look at ALL the combinations.  For me a factor was what color the navigation bar would be since it would be underlining my header.  So when the nav bar turned up orange and purple again and again I didn’t choose those combinations.  When the nav bar turned up grey (with the color set “shadow”), I couldn’t see my text, so I changed the text color to bright green.  Suddenly, I hit on a combination that I really liked.  Go to the next color set and go down the list of styles again.  I’m not going to do the math, but there are MANY choices when you do it this way.

Leah..., before you can put an image into the header, you need to put the header back on the page.  You can create your own header, but it doesn't sound like that is what you are trying to do.  Now that you have removed it, I hope there is a way to put it back.  Then follow Sister Irene's instructions for adding an image.

For other readers who may not know...if you use the advanced features and remove the header, footer or navigation using page properties, (uncheck include for the ones you don't want on that page) they can be put back by going back into page properties and checking to include them again.

Yes, and if you plan on modifying the header, navigation, or footer, you need to leave them present, otherwise how can we modify something that's not present.

Re: Putting custom pictures into the header.

BrokenStrings, your question is a bit like "how do I build a cold fusion reactor?"  As I understand it you are not looking to build a totally custom site at this point.  If this is your first site, I would recommend working with the site building tools provided with the following tips:

  1. Sketch the general look you are trying to get on a piece of paper.  Don't get too attached to it since it will change as you go along.
  2. Don't fight the tools that are provided.  That will only get you more frustrated.  Try to find ways to work with the tools.
  3. Don't go for all the special effects and whiz-bang at the start.  Work on content and overall design first.
  4. Make yourself a practice page and keep it off navigation (uncheck the box when you create the page).  Use the "General" theme with a single zone.
  5. Familiarize yourself with all the tools.  Click on all of the icons and see what they do.  Make a table; put a photo into a table cell; add some text; experiment with colors (border, foreground and background); make a hyperlink, etc.  Don't forget to check the right-click options for each tool.
  6. You'll find that your most valuable tool is a table.  They give you full control of how things are arranged on a page.  You will start to notice that every web site you visit is using them.  If the borders are the same color as the background, they will be invisible.  Keep them visible while you are building your page since placing things will be easier.  Experiment with spacing and padding to see the effect.  You can use nested tables (tables inside of a table cell) for interesting effects.  Use a one-celled table to create a border.  You can build your own navigation system with a table and the hyperlink tool.  Experiment with using an image as a table background.
  7. Keep your pages simple and straight forward.  Make them pleasing to the eye.  Avoid overdoing the colors, bolds, underlines, etc.

That should get you started.  When you reach a stumbling block, come back here and ask a specific question.  It's usually best to start a new thread as this one should have been, rather than attaching your question to an existing one.  Good luck.

Re: Putting custom pictures into the header.

I have a new page of an example site in my Office Live Design Tips that illustrates basically how I did both of my sites.  Step by step instructions included. It uses a little bit of the advanced features to remove the header, navigation and footer but otherwise just uses the Office Live editor.
