hello........can i use my account to create website with publisher?

hello,

this is my firstpost here. my problem is, i just cannot get adsense to work on my site.when i insert the code in what i think is the correct place, the webpage freezes when i try toview it.

This led me to design my own site using the new office publisher. Can i upload this to the web using my office live small business account? or do i have to use the templates provided?

So i suppose 2 questions in one post really.

hope somebody can help.

Welcome Karl,

Yes, you can use MS Publisher to design your site and upload to Office Live. It requires that you to activate 3rd party design tools (Home>Web Site>Site Actions .

You will then be able to copy/paste your site files from your hard drive to your site folder. Just make sure to rename your homepage to default.html, or default.aspx).

Check back here on the forums if you have more questions or concerns.

Re: hello........can i use my account to create website with publisher?

Hello Norris,

many thanks for your reply, i have activated 3rd party tools on my system, this prompted me to delete all my saved files on the office live web design thing which i have no problem with. I have tried to open up the "goto your website folder" tab which prompts me to enter my username and password. I have done so but a little pop up appears and tells me that i do not have the right permissions to access this resource. Th format of the specified network name is invalid. Very clearly Norris i'm an absolute beginner here so i would be glad of any advice on how to get round this,

thanks again,

Karl

Re: hello........can i use my account to create website with publisher?

Not at all Karl. Have you checked to ensure you're logging in with the proper Live ID (the one used to setup your Office Live account).

Try publishing directing from Publisher (File> Publish Web) and select your website folder (its usually located under My Network Places in XP or Network in Vista. It will again prompt for credentials. If you have issues logging in please contact Office Live support about problems opening your web folder.

Also, try opening your webside folder from another PC to see if you can replicate the same results.

Good luck.

I have a question pertaining to this.

I did all the instructions, then I go to the site I created, it tells me it is under construction. How long does this take to create? Thanks in advance

Hi Michael,

Can you give us the web address to check out?

The changes should instantly once you copy/publish/import your files to the website folder.

Regarding poetchaser, this is just a shot in the dark, but I have seen identical posts to this one.  It turned out the home page hadn't been given the address name "/default."  Could this be the case here?

Yes, like RXDave said, you need name the main file (home) default.htm or default.aspx.  Once you've done that you can also delete out the current default.aspx that is currently there.

Re: hello........can i use my account to create website with publisher?

 Hi Poetchaser,

I see a lot of your html files are located in a default_files directory and some images are at the root folder while others are in the default_files folder.  Try to get all your html files to be at the root (like the default.htm) and put all graphics in a images folder. Do this via Publisher, if possible. Moving the files yourself in the website folder may result in broken links.

Everything shows up fine on my end. I can see all your graphics and the navigation works.

I would highly recommend considering using the Office Live Web Design tool. You'll find it a whole lot easier to update your site using the online tool versus Publisher. However, I can understand why you may be using a 3rd Party Design tool if for instance, you're on a dialup connection and the Office Live Web Design tool doesn't work well on dialup.

If that's the case, you might want to invest into purchasing FrontPage. Publisher can do the job but might require additional work to update and publish your site to Office Live.

Good luck and fee free to come back to the forums for any additional advice.

Re: hello........can i use my account to create website with publisher?

Norris, if it is helpful, I have a dial-up account with an accelerator (Propel) and I have had a good experience using the built-in web design tool.  I agree that Poetchaser might find it easier to use it for what he is trying to do.

Re: hello........can i use my account to create website with publisher?

Thanks, RxDave,

I had a few clients who were on dialup tell me how bad the experience with a dialup connection. It's good to know Office Live works fine with a speed boost (Propel).

I've been on a broadband connection for a while now (nearly 9yrs) and I've almost forgot about tools to speed up your dialup conneciton.

Thanks.

Norris
