Gary,
It's true that a community provides a lot of points of view in regards to what is discussed within a community. I have no problem with that. There are plenty of people that place links in there signatures as well and I have no problem with that. For most communities that is the only acceptable place to put links to your site.
My remarks come from experience in dozens of online communities where often times a person makes one post in a community forum with a link to their site in an attempt to create backlinks to their own site (spamming the search engines) and provide no further value. This is the impression when a first post by a person is as the first post here.
Many of the experts within the internet marketing community will tell you that those types of posts will get you banned. Instead, you should provide valuable feedback and ask questions and let your signature do your marketing for you. If you do so, people will likely follow the links in your signature to see if they can learn more from you. This is valuable whether the links have nofollow attributes set or not.
djcmilton,
Welcome to the community. My post is more based on experience in the dozens of forums that I frequent and gather experience from. Perhaps a better way to start would be to provide a tip on your ideas with internet marketing. Maybe how your use of a newsletter form can help a business or your experience with it. Then provide your signature at the bottom of your posts as Gary (scbyte) has.
A great tip in fact is the blog that you have. Using Blogger and providing information to others, with links to your primary website (once you start providing that value) is a great way to get started with internet marketing as Blogger sites get indexed quickly (it helps that Blogger is owned by Google).
Your information on determination and persistence is dead on in any endeavor. And if you are willing to help others or ask questions, then I more than welcom you to the forum. I have't posted much here myself as I am so busy working on an application that I think many here would appreciate.
I apologize for the harshness to you if you are willing to contribute.
Ted
