Crappy looking Website

I just need some advice.  How does everyone get those great looking websites with the templates that are offered on OfficeLive????  I tried to upload my logo and it looks terrible!  And I could not correct it and take it out.  I had to create a big text header to cover the crappy logo and it look horrible too.  AND it won't let me move it around.  How do design your own page with out the template??  Everything looks "beginner"  How do I create my "own".  Just soooo frustrated.  I want an swesome site but I feel stiffled by your tools.  Can you help.  My website is www.servingourseniorstx.com.

Re: Crappy looking Website

There are several questions that arise from your comments.  First, we all started where you are now.  The thing to remember is that if you don't like something, you don't have to leave it that way.  If you are unhappy with the logo, get a different logo and replace it.  Just upload a different one and then re-select it.  This all takes a lot of trial and error.  You do something.  You don't like it.  Delete it.  Do something else.  I notice you still have one of the stock photos in the header.  If you like it, that's fine, but you're not required to use it.

Have you run through all of the color schemes?  Have your tried all of the header templates?  Changes are just a couple of clicks away.  Keep at it until you get things the way you like them.  That's the advantage of this system.  You can change things on a whim.  In the old forums, I did an exercise with the combinations of tools provided and determined that there are several million design possibilities with the built-in features.  The custom possibilities take it even further.  I think another thing that is helpful is to be curious, bold and willing to explore around all of the tools and see what the possibilities are.  Make a test page off-navigation where you can experiment and try things.

I will go and see if it is possible to delete a logo...

OK, Open the Site Designer.  Click on "Logo" to open the dialog.  Scroll to the bottom of the images and click on "No Logo."  Click on "OK."

Come back if you have any other questions.  That's why we are here.

To remove a logo from the header, click on logo in Site Designer and select 'None'

I don't think your site looks bad.  If you made the text header smaller, so it wasn't larger than the image in the header it would look better and the header would'nt be so tall.  It matches the colors in the image nicely and I like your color and image choice.  In that header, the image is 224px high.  Keep the text and background to that size and it should work better.

If you check out the Masters Forum (below this one in this community), you'll find lots of tips and ideas at those sites.  My tip site has one way to make things 'your own', although it isn't something everyone wants to do.  There is a link to it in my signature.

Thanks so much.  The title is so big because my logo keeps showing up with a white backgroud.  Tried everything in Photoshop to save it transparent but it still shows up with the dawgone white background.  Then I could'n't delete it or move it around.  I was stuck!

Unfortunately on MSOL the logo spot is square.....if you want to do a different shape then change the background via Photoshop to the color of your header and Ta-Dah its a whole new logo in header that isn't square. Its a workaround but that's the answer

Re: Crappy looking Website

Ghoster had a good idea with just using the background color of your header in your photoshop image.

The alternative is to save the image as a gif and set the transparency color. Of course, this can be a real mess depending on the color of the background. The other option is to save the file as a png with transparencey settings (Don't use Photoshop, so don't know how to ensure that they are there) and then put a css behavior for pngs that make them transparent in IE 6 and IE5.5. Firefox and IE7 automatically handle transparent pings. A good fix can be found at http://jquery.andreaseberhard.de/pngFix/.
