Tables and Text

Thanks to all on this site, I've learned a great deal in the past few days.  I've been reading the master's tips & tricks and it's all great stuff - when it works!  :)

When it doesn't is what causes me the most aggravation;  I've gone in and deleted cookies, cleaned up the temps, etc.

After figuring out about using tables, I still cannot line two tables up next to each other.  And I can't put text next to the tables.  Sue suggested putting the text into a table, which is a good idea, but then I can't get the table to move where I want it.  I can put text under and above the tables, not next to them.

I'm also having trouble still with the horizontal line - cannot click on it and enlarge it - Sue tried helping me with this too, but nothing works.  We're thinking glitch in the system somewhere, but OL or mine?

Any other thoughts would be helpful.  Have to head to work, but I'll check back this evening.

Also someone suggested copying and pasting from either the online web page or from Word.  I've tried both and it works sometimes but most of the time it breaks the page.

 Thanks in advance!

Sue

Re: Tables and Text

First, TABLES:  You will learn the true meaning of aggravation trying to get side-by-side tables to line up.  Instead of two tables, why not make one large one?  This way everything will line up perfectly.  Remember, you can merge rows and columns and insert rows and columns when needed.  The weather data at the top of my home page looks like 4 separate tables, but it is actually one table with some of the rows and columns colored white.  Another tip is to design your table layout on a test page off navigation.  When you get it the way you want, copy the whole thing to the final location.

TEXT NEXT TO TABLES:  Again, this will only lead to aggravation.  Add columns and rows to contain text.  Sketch the layout on paper first to figure out how many rows and columns you want.  You can also put tables inside of other table cells.  For example, create a two column table.  Put another table in the left cell and your text in the right cell.  Another advantage in using tables this way is that you get explicit control of the height and width of your layout.

HORIZONTAL LINES:  Move your mouse pointer over the line until the crossed arrows appear.  Then click

COPYING AND PASTING:  For Word text, don't put any fancy formatting into the text.  It won't carry through to your web page anyway.  Do the formatting after you paste.  If you are copying code, always paste it first on a test page.  Make sure it works before putting it in the real location.

Come back if any of this isn't clear.  The final point is to find a way to use the tools to your advantage.  Don't try and fight the tools.  Good luck.

Re: Tables and Text

RXDave - I'd posted last night but it didn't appear.  I went to IE instead of Firefox and am now able to do so much more.  What a relief!  Thanks for all the help - It's getting there - hate to think where I would be if it wasn't for the helps forums and the people here.

Thanks,

Sue

Re: Tables and Text

Thanks!  But I was working on it last night and went back in to the other pages I've been neglecting and some of them were screwed up because the night before I 'set out' to clean up my image gallery so it would load faster!  Hahaha - no do, susyq!  I had to reload all the pictures and then go through every page and make sure they popped back up!  What a trip!  Mastery of the tables???  Not hardly, not yet!!!  But learning for sure.

So if you check it out again sometime - I think it will look a bit better.  Also it would make my day if you (and others) would  look at my home page that I worked on last night if you get a chance.  I like it....nah....yeah...but when I compare it to yours I think mine is gaudy and heavy!

Re: Tables and Text

Hi Sue,

You made me laugh while I had my coffee.lol...thanks for that!  I checked out your Homepage again and I really like it :).  It's good to get other opinions because I don't think you see your work as others see it.  Funny you should say that because I always hate my Homepage compared to everyone else's..lol.  Anyway, I think the tables and pictures look great and show exactly what your website is all about.  The one thing I might change is the text in that first table, next to the puppy.  I think its alittle overwhelming to the table...takes up alittle too much room compared to the other text in tables.  Maybe just get rid of the spaces between sentences or try a different font. Also, your page extends just the tiniest little bit to the right over the end of the header.  This always drives me crazy on my own site.  I've ripped many pages apart just so everything is all lined up and nice and straight, lol. Okay, this could just be me and an OCD issue..lets not go there!!  :).  As far as the Image Gallery goes, I did the exact same thing!!  Cleaned out all the pics I didn't think I needed anymore, and when I looked at my pages half of the pictures were gone!  Unfortunately, this is how you learn what NOT to do.  I think you're off to a really good start.  Love your Homepage and what your website is all about :).  You're learning fast...just keep going, you're doing great...

Re: Tables and Text

Before you start ripping things apart!!.....try making the puppy pic alittle smaller.  That might be enough to pull the side back in under the header.  Hope it works for you :)

Re: Tables and Text

Glad to add a little chuckle to your life!

I changed the type size and closed up the gaps!  Wow!  After all the times I worked with it and looked at it, I never saw it - until making it smaller. Looks so much better.  Would have overlooked it had you not mentioned it!  Don't want to bowl 'em over, do we!  My motto:  If you can't dazzle 'em with your brilliance, baffle 'em with your bull...  But somehow I just don't think that motto will fit in good with our theme ....sigh!

I had no trouble resizing to fit in the boundaries.  My kritter page is offset too - have more work to do on it.  Can't seem to get one of my web pages to upload into the document gallery - all the rest did, so must have some glitchy stuff goin' on there.

Back to editing!  Great tips!  Thank you!

 Sue

I really like your site. Can you tell me how you applied the border to your pics?

Re: Tables and Text

Hi mzle :)

I'm not sure which of us you meant, but you can make borders around your pictures  by putting them in tables. You can color the inside and the border of the table differently. You can also add colors to the borders by putting tables inside tables. Its best to make a test page off navigation where you can try things out and experiment a bit first before you try things on your actual webpage. The tables modual is located in the Page Editor. Have some fun exploring :)

Re: Tables and Text

Hi mzle22,

Not sure who's site you are referring to, but it popped up in my email, so I'll throw in my two cents worth.  Everything on my site is from the help of the people on this community - gypssy being one of the great helps to me.  It may take you awhile to get the feel of it; but once you learn to use the tables, you'll spend less time pulling your hair out.  Like gypssy says - have fun experimenting.  Our site has grown in stages - and I haven't had a moment to tweak it for weeks.  It's on my agenda very soon.  I have a friend online who purposely checks it off and on to critique it for me - helps to have an honest 'fresh' look at it.  She's found spelling errors for me and even a missing picture once.  I still can't figure out how to use Firefox/Mozilla with it - comes up distorted every time.

There's lots of good, good helpers here - willing to take time with you - so don't hesitate to ask.  There are also some who have step by step diagrams too.

Happy Building!

Sue

Re: Tables and Text

Sue it seems you have mastered the tables pretty well. I too can't get want i want exactly where i want it. As you've said, trying to line two tables right next to each other is nigh on impossible. I read further up that just put it in one large box; which at first is what i did, but i think this causes problems when browsing through Firefox or Mozilla - pulling the content apart and making it look practically unviewable. At least it does with mine anyway.

I have already asked whether anyone knows how to 'lock' everything in place but i didn't get an answer.. So i'm now trying to put everything in seperate tables hoping that will keep it in place no matter what platform it's being viewed in.

..So back to the problem of the tables not going exactly where i want..?? Extremely frustrating.

Re: Tables and Text

pmb, can you post your site so we can see what you mean by "pulling everything apart."  I have several large tables and they look fine in FF3.0.  The only problem I have had with FF is HTML modules inside of table cells and iframes.  I have some fixes that I will be working on.  My experience has been that when using tables, content does stay put, and that has been the primary reason to use them.

Are you using the 100% width setting?  With that setting everything will shimmy around depending on the browser width.  Try the 780px setting to "lock" everything in place.  (Site Designer > Advanced > Options >  Page Setup > Page Width)

Re: Tables and Text

There are many places where you can get a good html editor (Download.com) online don't try to use Word it will only make a bigger mess. I make all my tables in my html editor and not the online editor and then just attach to the page using a html module.
