How a mentor can benefit women in business

When you're working on your own, you still need help ramping up your business and avoiding common errors.

"One of the pitfalls of being home-based can be isolation," says Jeanne Hurlbert, who coaches women entrepreneurs and teaches at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. "Home-based business owners need to make social network connections every bit as much as other business owners, but need specific strategies to do so." Finding a mentor is a good way to get started, she says.

Mentoring is more than friendly advice

The mentoring relationship is perfect for a small-business owner because it is flexible by nature. You can have regular meetings with specific session lengths, or you can simply arrange a schedule of phone calls. Your mentor may be paid or unpaid. You can have one mentor or several, depending on your needs and a mentor’s expertise or availability.

Re: How a mentor can benefit women in business

I too am a woman owned business who is also contracted with another business. With both of my latest ventures,  I work mainly from home and online. Isolation is a big thing for me.

I did what Jeanne Hurlbert said and found a mentor that got me out of the house with several networking groups.

I started a BNI group and joined as many chamber events as I could and I give seminars on SEO to other small biz's.

Now not only am I out there in the real world, but I am also driving the sales through the roof.

Great tip. Thanks Jeanne.

Thanks again for the advise Jeanne

Re: How a mentor can benefit women in business

I have a home-based business in web design, development and optimization. Having a good mentor is invaluable. Someone with experience, knowledge and a heart that cares enough to help make since of it all; Also, it is important to network with others. It is important to understand that we need a mentor or mentors. I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and meet Jacob J S Bornman, social marketing expert. He has been of tremendous help, and is extremely resourceful.
