How do I make money?

I am trying to earn a supplemental income in the evenings and/or on Sunday, doing consulting (preferably online).  I have 26+ years experience in programming, mostly in C and C++, most of it DOS progrrams and hand-held programs, including RF.  I have learned Java, C#, and WebSphere but have not done a whole lot in them.  I have never done independent consulting.  I created a web site and a business name, including a slogan, but I'm not sure where to go from here.

My site is:  www.JustRightSoftware.net

My email is JustRightSoftware@hotmail.com

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks!

After Looking at you page I really don't understand what it is that you are selling no links, no more pages on the sight spend a little more time on the Page design feature there is no cost to all these features. Work up a description of your products. I hope this helps. I am kind of new at this too! Sorry.

Manny,

I'll bet you're a brilliant programmer.  How do I know, you ask?  Because your site looks like something my husband might have put together . . . and he's hopelessly left-brained and also a brilliant programmer.    ;-]

Have you done a google search for "freelance programming"?  You might find a site where you can register as a freelancer, or one where they put programming jobs out for bid. Or you could list your services with an agency.

But first you need to get your website in shape so you can refer people to it. You definitely need to crop your header image . . . better yet, get rid of it entirely as it's not a good quality image. The photo & text are sufficient. I'd also suggest that you select a different color scheme---one that provides enough color contrast between the navigation button background and text to make them legible.

There should be some individual programmers' sites online that will give you an idea of the sort of information you could add to your site:  testimonials, descriptions of the types of programs you've written, the types of businesses that might need your services and what you can do for them, etc.

Good luck!

If you are looking for free-lance work in your field, try http://www.rentacoder.com, http://www.guru.com or http://www.elance.com. I would try them in the order that I listed them as elance requires an upfront fee and rent-a-coder is easier to get setup with.

Personally I cannot speak as an expert as to your question, but I can say  you should at least make yourself more “visible” and try partnering with those that will make up for your weaknesses, while YOU compensate for theirs. In addition you have gotten some good advice from those that previously posted. Now you just need to take it.  ldronnow (Larry) is right in his advice, for instance look at his site, Asctraininginc.com. It’s straight forward and functional, even helping the people to register for the classes he offers. And cd says something similar and could not be more gracious in how she says it (I wish I had her tact). CD’s and teddarling’s (Ted) recommendations to look to freelance on project outsourcing sites is also a good idea, but I would have to say you should do something about your online presence first.

To get up and going as quickly as possible try starting with a Windows Live Spaces (you can view mine as an example), and later link it to your website. This is a quick way to get up and going and then you can be working on your website or find someone to do it for you. Even one of my MOL websites, The Proficients Project Inc., I have yet to launch (I know shame on me) but I still have an online presence while I continue to work on it.  Also, I recommend you read “Finding the group's in which you belong is not easy, but necessary.” When you find someone to partner with you, you may have them consider doing something like this, and link back to it when necessary.  These are just some ideas, but we look forward to hearing how Office Live Small Business helps you along this journey. Be sure to let us know how things are going.
