What Should You Do if a phishing scam lands in your inbox

There are several steps you can take when a phishing scam lands in your inbox. You could simply delete it, but that does nothing to deter or apprehend the violators. You can find the complete list of addresses to report this to at the following URL

Also, some companies want to see the full header information in the email if you can give it to them, but not all email providers (ie...yahoo) show the full header information (typically found in the area around the From:/To: lines) in the email by default. The header information is a full list of where the email originated and each stop it took getting to you. They leave the information out because the information it contains is fairly useless for the average computer user, but it can help the companies out by giving them a much more detailed view of where the email started from, thus making it easier for them to track down the person who sent you the phishing email.

Each email program is different, so in some you may need to go into options and select it to show headers, where others may be as simple as clicking a text link (should say something like "Full Header") while you are viewing the email. Not all providers have an option for it, so don't feel like you have to spend a lot of time searching for the option.

Whether you send it with full header information or not, it is important that you never alter the email in any way (that includes adding a comment to the company you forward it to) as they need to see the email in its original form.

How about if something like that lands in your guest book? I got the code from http://solutionsforofficelive.com/businessapps.aspx and there's nothing wrong with the code, but I had to take that page down because in the last week I've gotten four spams. One said it was from "Cheap Discount Airline Tickets"
with links to a website, and the one before was "Cheap Airline Tickets to
Italy". Then I had two from "hrjknfcxi xdmz". It says they're from a "System Account." I ran AdAware, SpyBot, and Norton's and I don't have a virus. I've notified Office Live. That ever happen to anyone else?

Unrelated, I also had an e-mail sent from another of my hotmail accounts to people in my address book that said "Hi, Susan Houck" in the subject, and the contents were to check out a website or e-mail someone.

Scary stuff, the internet, sometimes. Especially when running a business.

I just put this in the General Discussions. "Money Scams using live.com and other trusted pages" Should it be over here?

What I learned in the last 2 days about resoving a 419 money scam and a warning that your loved ones may not be as knowlegable as we are. Dont assume that they know.

Judging by the random letters and the fact that they are links, I'd guess it's either a false website trying to get you to unknowingly download a keylogger or some such thing or it's porn. Either way, it's spam. I'm not actually going to go to the page to see so have to guess a little here. Where and how did you receive it? That determines what your options are.

Re: Wierd messages from the contact us page on our site.

I was getting spam e-mails from my contact us page, and it was suggested here to put a hit counter on my page that gives me IP addresses. I put one up that day, and haven't gotten another spam or phishing message since.  Here's where you can get one, and I like it cause it give all kinds of other info as well... http://cqcounter.com.  Oh, and I posted right above the contact us form "Spammers Beware!  I now have your IP address!"  Hope this suggestion helps.
