I have ativated 3rd party editing and now when I view my site I get "This site is currently under construction." I have created a html file for my home page and named it default.aspx. I also tried naming it default.html neither one worked. If I remove the aspx file named default.aspx that is put there by microsoft my site comes up with a 404 error.

Did you copy the home page you created to the Office Live webfolder? Make sure you are dealing with the correct file - if default.aspx was really the one you craeted it, Office Live will show your file. Otherwise, the site is currently under construction is the default.aspx that came with Office Live, which you want to replace with your own home page.
